    Description

    These copper coins were minted in 1859, 1861, 1862 and 1863.
    The State of Sonora was not exempt from the lack of fractional currency that would help in small commercial transactions;
    so dated 1859 and later from 1861 to 1863, he had these copper coins minted, which unfortunately also had the rejection of society, to such a degree that special measures had to be taken.
    Alberto Francisco Pradeau, wrote: “Apparently, the copper coin was only accepted in certain mercantile centers, and to avoid the accumulation of it and the consequent discount that would occur, Mr. Ignacio Pesqueira issued the circular of May 9, 1862, in the one that declared "that the copper currency circulates and is of forced receipt in all the Districts and towns of the State, without exception" adding that all the payments of contributions and taxes of the State and municipal should be made in copper currency.
    These coppers are cataloged as KM # 365 and this is their description:
    Obverse.- The National Shield with the eagle to the right and devouring a snake in its beak;
    in the lower part the traditional branches and in the upper part, in a semicircle, abbreviated: Free and Sovereign State of Sonora.
    Reverse.- The female figure of Liberty in the center, sitting and turning to the left;
    it has a rod and on it the Phrygian cap;
    the legend "Una Cuartilla de Real" and the date.
    Its module is 32 mm.
    The State of Sonora, like many others, soon found itself with a large number of copper coins, which made them take all kinds of measures to begin to withdraw them from circulation, a process that lasted several years.
